Who is guiding you in your Spiritual Journey? by Pastor Suprine Murove

“… Should the living seek guidance from the dead?” (Is 8:19)

If the axe is dull,
And one does not sharpen the edge,
Then he must use more strength;
But wisdom brings success.

(Ecclesiastes 10:10)

A theodolite is a tool that measures vertical and horizontal angles from one point targeted through a telescopic eye
God has given us seven guiding lights by which we can have Divine Guidance and avoid running aground. These are:

1. An inward Conviction/ Witness of the Spirit/ Revelation Knowledge
2. Confirmation in Scripture
3. Prophetic Confirmation
4. Godly Counsel
5. The Peace of God
6. Circumstantial Evidence
7. God’s provision

C. Prophetic Confirmation
You can’t navigate by one light, and you will seldom keep on course with two lights: so there is a third light which God may give:

Prophetic confirmation by prophecy

3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
(1 Cor 14:3-4)

Prophetic Confirmation Is Mainly Through The Word Of God

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 All things that the Father has are Mine. (John 16:13-14)

In Acts 20:20-23, Paul is warned by the Holy Spirit

22 And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there,
23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.
24 But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Paul is warned through the Spirit in Acts 21:4-5
4 And finding disciples, we stayed there seven days. They told Paul through the Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.
5 When we had come to the end of those days, we departed and went on our way; and they all accompanied us, with wives and children, till we were out of the city. And we knelt down on the shore and prayed.

The prophet Agabus confirmed something that Paul knew (Acts 21:8 – 14 )

10 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ” (Acts 21:10 – 11)

•These three Scripture passages dealt with prophetic confirmation regarding Paul’s going up to Jerusalem. Each one confirmed the other.

•This teaches us that there is confirmation available to us through prophecy if given by the Holy Spirit.

•Such prophecies must confirm the inward conviction that has come to us, and which in turn has lined up with the word of God.

D. Godly Counsel

This is the light of God’s counsel. Solomon said, a thousand years before Christ,

”.. in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Prov 11:14)

Seek Respected mature Elders:
When we speak of godly counsel, we do not mean going to a novice or a fellow teenager for advice,

We are speaking about Godly counsel from a Respected mature Elder, one with spiritual Understanding who knows the ways of God and has been walking with God for many years.

You will be wise to consider the counsel of such a man or woman as godly.

Bad example: 1 Kings 12: 4-11

10 Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!
11 And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!’ ”

Circumstantial Evidence. In seeking divine guidance, God gives us a fifth light, confirming circumstances.

When you are walking in the centre of God’s will, you will often begin to see definite confirming evidence.

God will begin to give circumstantial evidence that you are on the path of His will.

What is the Source of a Temptation
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. (James 1:13-14)

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Cor 10:13)
Is It An Opportunity or A Temptation
An opportunity may present itself and it may look very appealing, that does not necessarily mean its from God. It may actually be a temptation.

•Samson and Delila
• Saul and The prophet Samuel
But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed. (1 sam 15:9)

Is It An Opportunity or A Temptation
22 So Samuel said:
“Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
He also has rejected you from being king.” (1 Sam 15:22-23)

Is It An Opportunity or A Temptation

Just coz an open door looks a little uncertain, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t walk through it

32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” (Nu 13: 32-33)

How can I Know whether its an Opportunity or a Temptation

•The door that God opens never contradict His Word (Heb 10:25 and 2 Cor 6:14)

•God will not open a door that would Require Personal Compromise or disobedience in order to Enter. (James 1:13-14)

The peace of God. The sixth light of guidance is the peace of God. The peace of God comes by walking in obedience to the will of God.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The Peace of God Is Your Umpire:
In Verse 7 the word “guard” is key word.
It means the Peace of God “shall act as an umpire”

The purpose of the umpire in rugby or baseball is to watch and control the athletic contest so that the rules are followed

So then, the peace of God must act as an umpire to tell us whether we’ve struck out” or whether we’re in safe at home plate”
